Filiberto Ojeda Ríos, an independence fighter who espoused armed struggle to "throw off the yoke of US colonialism", was killed by FBI agents in the town of Hormigueros, Puerto Rico on 23 September. Although his cause was shared by very few Puerto Ricans and his methods by still fewer, his violent death triggered protests and has put the status question back on the political agenda. According to the FBI Ojeda Ríos opened fire on FBI agents after they knocked on the door of a farmhouse where he was staying near Hormigueros to arrest him. One FBI agent was severely wounded after being shot in the stomach. Ojeda Ríos had been on the run for 15 years after severing his electronic tag when he was released on bail in 1990 after serving time for armed robbery.End of preview - This article contains approximately 659 words.
